Well, it’s that time of year again! Another year over, a new one just begun…
Usually I like to do a roundup of my favorite books from the year and I thought I’d also shine a spotlight on some of the other things I’ve tried this year, like beauty products. So without further ado, here’s a roundup of the Best of 2017.
Best of 2017: Books
My top 3 favorite books I read in 2017 are:
…In that order! I adore Margaret Atwood, and The Blind Assassin was a heart-stopping adventure into a family’s deep dark secrets in the 1930s. It combined Atwood’s ability to create fantasy with her astute observations of humanity. I loved it so much.
Second on my list is the massive, fictionalized history of New York by Edward Rutherfurd. Throughout the generations of a handful of families, the history of New York comes to life like you’ve never seen it before. It’s huge, but so worth it.
Lastly, Norse Mythology also tops the list because it rekindled a love of Norse mythology in me and influenced a lot of my thoughts and writing this year. It’s a retelling of Norse myths, without compromising their integrity and without reading as dry and boring. Highly recommended!
Best of 2017: Beauty
The best beauty products I’ve tried this year are the:
…In that order! The Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub is the perfect gentle daily exfoliating wash for my combination, acne-prone skin. It has activated charcoal in it and leaves my skin feeling tingly after I use it. It scrubs without drying me out, and my skin heals so well if I use it consistently during a breakout. It’s definitely a must-have.
Second on my list is the Face Halo. It’s a small microfiber round that’s used to take makeup off using only water. That’s right: no makeup remover wipes or micellar water. It works super well and it’s washable and reusable up to 200 times. It is synthetic, which is a bummer, but it also keeps cleansing cloths out of landfills, which is a plus. And it’s a fraction of the cost of buying makeup wipes every month!
Lastly, the Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Melting Cleanser is also one of my 2017 faves, even if it does contradict the usefulness of the Face Halo. I tried a sample of this cleanser this year and loved the experience, even if I haven’t replaced it. If you’re looking for a good makeup-melting remover and cleanser, this is one of the best I’ve ever tried!
Best of 2017: Brands
Two of my favorite brands this year are Charlotte Russe and Free People. Even though they have very different price points, I think they’re each great for different reasons. This year, I bought from Charlotte Russe more often, after forgetting for a long time that they were still around. And even though the dresses and shoes on the site are pretty inexpensive, I’ve found that the quality is actually very good! I’ve bought two beautiful pairs of tapestry shoes from Charlotte Russe this year, as well as some clothes, and I’ve been so happy with the quality. And in fact, Charlotte Russe sometimes stocks the same dresses as Francesca’s, but for half the price. So amazing.
The second brand I want to highlight is Free People. I have always loved Free People, but this year I have newfound appreciation for the materials they use in their clothing. In addition to having the best boho designs around, they also use a lot of cotton. I’d rather buy cotton clothes than any other fiber, and when I shop at Free People I know I’m getting product that’s decently priced (especially when they have sales), is good quality, beautifully designed, and mostly cotton. I adore Free People.
