It’s only a week until the official beginning of the holiday season, and if you’re celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah, that means presents. Now, of course, gifting and getting presents are only a teeny part of this beautiful season, but if you’re like me, you actually enjoy giving gifts and you’re eager to get the perfect gifts for a good price. For me, that means saving early and making really good, budget-friendly choices. Here are some tips to save money and scale back on spending this season.
Start putting aside money each week, starting as soon as you want.
Every year, I have the idea to set aside a little money each week for Christmas, and then inevitably I forget until like August. This year, I started to save money and then ended up spending it when I needed to pay a bill and had to start over. But if you can get organized and budget, this is the best way to feel like you’re not draining your paycheck or bank account every Christmas. I started saving again and it’s such a nice feeling knowing I’m on top of my finances.
Use rebate apps and programs like the Hopster Mobile Rebates App.
I love rebate apps, and Hopster is a really cool one. Hopster really comes in handy during the holidays when you can get a lot of cash back because you’re shopping more than you usually do. Hopster is a great rebates app because you don’t have to reach a certain number or value of redeemed offers before cash is credited to your PayPal account, so no waiting for your rebates! Here’s the basic how-to:
- On the app, choose a retailer from their wide selection and view their rebate offers
- Shop at any store (pick your fave!)
- After you’ve bought, take a photo with your receipt showing the items you’ve purchased.
- Rebates are redeemed and the cash will go to your PayPal as soon as the redemption is validated. No waiting.
It’s really good for groceries, beauty essentials, appliances, pet supplies, and all kinds of new products you’ll want to try. It’ll help if you’re cooking and cleaning for the holiday season.
What’s also cool about this app is that you can share savings and product recommendations with friends and family, and provide feedback to manufacturers on the brands and products you’ve used.
Start creating a folder for sale email blasts, for when you need gift inspiration.
Those awful email marketing blasts from stores are actually going to be useful this time of year. If you’re already signed up for a few, start collecting them in a dedicated folder in your email so you can look up deals and coupons when you need to. If you’re not signed up, so many stores offer a percent off incentive to join their email list, which will rack up the savings!
