I have big news! Yesterday I published my first work of fiction, a short piece called “The Sirens,” over at a lit mag called Visitant. This is a huge accomplishment for me, and I could not be happier. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know how long I’ve wanted to be a published writer and how much I love stories. Writing consistently is one of my challenges, especially with both a full-time job and blogging, and publishing in my 20s was always a goal for me. Now that I’ve started, even in a small way, I hope I never stop!
The piece is a re-imagining of the classic Greek myth of the sirens, and I loved writing this myth with a modern point of view. I have always loved mythology, folklore, and fairy tales, and writing something like this felt natural to me. I hope you like it!
To be quite honest, working up the courage to send out my work for publication was part of the struggle. I’ve always been a really private person, but since I’ve begun blogging here and making writing an integral part of my life, I’ve become braver and more willing to share my writing and my perspectives. I started submitting short fiction in the past two years to creative and lifestyle blogs, and I loved getting feedback from readers. My next goal, which I’ve never yet accomplished, is to finish NaNoWriMo in November and work on a novel I’ve been fiddling with for a while. Wish me luck!
2017 has been an amazing year for me so far; with a new job and better work/life balance, I’ve been able to reach so many of the goals I’ve set for myself, both personal and professional. And I’ve also learned some tips and tricks along the way to make goal-setting and goal-reaching a little easier! I’d love to share some of those tips here with you, and hopefully we can all work together to reach those new heights. 🙂
