Today, in “things you never knew existed,” I try out a DNA skin test! It’s called HomeDNA™ Skin Care, and it’s a service that gives you a skin evaluation and product recommendations based on your individual DNA. Based on the (correct) assumption that skincare for women is confusing, saturated, and difficult to demystify (and find something that actually works for you), HomeDNA™ Skin Care lets users search for products that would be tailor-made for your skin’s specific needs.
I was given the opportunity to try out this unique service free of charge, and this is what I thought!
- To begin this process, you have to order a kit from the HomeDNA website. They send you the literature you need to go through the process, cotton swabs to swab your inner cheek, and envelopes to send everything back.
- To swab your cheek, you have to stick the swab in your mouth and swipe the swab on your inner cheek up and down and side to side, for 60 seconds each. I timed it with my phone to make sure I was following the instructions exactly!
- Send everything back to the lab per the instructions, and your results will be emailed to you in 3 weeks!
It was a simple and easy process, and I reeeeaally looked forward to my results. My skin has always been an issue of mine; from when I was a young teenager, I’ve had acne and tried everything to fix it, from ProActiv to frequent dermatologist visits. Now, thankfully, my skin is manageable through frequent moisturizing and moderate exfoliation, and even though my skin is super oily, I’d rather be oily than too dry, so I manage!
In three weeks, my results were available on all the categories, which are:
- Collagen Quality
- Skin Elasticity
- Fine Lines & Wrinkles
- Sun Protection
- Skin Antioxidants
- Skin Sensitivity
Here’s a snapshot of my results:
That’s just the summary page; each category has its own explanations and recommendations. It’s a very thorough report, which confirmed some things I already knew (skin pigmentation/protection and fine lines and wrinkles) and some I’m so grateful to know now (skin antioxidants and collagen quality) so I can prevent premature aging and take care of my skin the best I can.
What I Think
It’s very appealing to know exactly what your skin needs and thus look for the products you know will work, rather than just test-and-try (even though that’s fun) until you hit upon a magical combination. While there are so many beauty products I’ve loved in the past, the HomeDNA™ Skin Care kit let me take the guesswork out of the process!
Here are a few products I want to try based on my skin analysis:
These products contain the ingredients I should look for in topical treatments: alpha lipoic acid, peptides, and retinyl palmitate! It’s gibberish otherwise, but the HomeDNA™ Skin Care kit let me know what they do and why I need them. SO COOL. I can’t recommend this service enough, and I even want to try their Ancestry service!
The HomeDNA™ Skin Care kit was provided free of charges and fees by the company via Lipton Publicity. The retail price is $99.
