Inspiration by Paulo Coelho

I’m not one for motivational quotes. Sometimes, I think they’re simplistic and cheesy, but every once in a while, I’ll come across a quote that makes me stop and think and that gives me some hope, strength, or motivation. Usually, these quotes come from books.

The other day, I was just sort of agonizing over my life and what to do with it, and finding it difficult to make changes and sort of have my life on a trajectory to reach my goals, and I got a notification from my WordPress app that someone had commented on a book review I wrote here back in 2013—By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept by Paulo Coelho. In the review, I excerpted this quote I’d loved back then, but that I’d forgotten about since:

You have to take risks, he said. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen. Every day, God gives us the sun–and also one moment in which we have the ability to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven’t perceived that moment, that it doesn’t exist–that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if people really pay attention to their everyday lives, they will discover that magic moment. It may arrive in the instant when we are doing something mundane, like putting our front-door key in the lock; it may lie hidden in the quiet that follows the lunch hour or in the thousand and one things that all seem the same to us. But that moment exists–a moment when all the power of the stars becomes a part of us and enables us to perform miracles.

I’m not really religious, but the sentiment is similar even if you’re not. That quote just appeared, as if out of nowhere, on a day I really needed to read it. I’m so grateful for that, and for the meaning of the quote. It reminded me that we each have the power to change things about our lives that are making us unhappy, and that each day is an opportunity to create a life we want. Not perfect—but happier. Gotta love Paulo Coelho.

This Paulo Coelho quote also a reminder that happiness is a choice we each make, that we all have a million reasons to complain, and be negative, and wish for things we think will make us happier, but that if we really want to be happy, we just have to make up our minds to be. Nothing will ever be perfect, but happiness isn’t contingent on perfect. It’s all about your state of mind.

Another one:

Joy is sometimes a blessing, but it is often a conquest. Our magic moment help us to change and sends us off in search of our dreams. Yes, we are going to suffer, we will have difficult times, and we will experience many disappointments — but all of this is transitory it leaves no permanent mark. And one day we will look back with pride and faith at the journey we have taken.

So that’s it for today: just some musings for you, and maybe some inspiration for those of you who may also be having a bad day/week/month, or whatever. Maybe you need to read this quote, too. 🙂

  • Thanks for the inspiration! I’ve been thinking a lot lately not about what would make me happy but about how I and so many of us waste too much of our lives doing things that make us unhappy. Definitely been reflecting a lot on what I want for the future!
