Reads & Recs: Russian and Ukrainian Authors

Here’s what I’ll be reading this month:

The Collected Stories of Nikolai Gogol: I’m recently so interested in Ukrainian literature and thought to read some authors I haven’t read before. Nikolai Gogol was actually born in Ukraine, and his Collected Stories are split in two parts: The Ukrainian Tales and The Petersburg Tales. He’s widely considered just a Russian author but his roots are in Ukraine.

Dead Souls, Nikolai Gogol: Dead Souls is also on my list. Gogol’s comic, satirical novel about a nobleman who buys dead serfs’ names to mortgage them and thus become a rich, powerful man in society.

The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky: And then I’ll finally get to Dostoyevsky, and have chosen The Brothers Karamazov as my first.

Have you guys read these? Are you reading anything special right now?

  • Great choices! I read Dead Souls last year and loved it. Gogol is wonderful. If you haven’t read it, check out Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita. Such a wonderful book.

Either way, thanks for sharing! If you’re ever interested in some other awesome book reviews and musings, be sure to follow! Thanks!

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll be sure to check out your blog as well.

  • I agree with Book Guy Reviews! Master and Margarita is my favourite book of all time – it’s absolutely amazing. You should check out Chekhov’s short stories as well 🙂

    • Thanks! I actually read Chekhov and love him. I’ll have to read that book now!
